Can a person’s weight loss be purchased from the store? I wish I could tell you that miracle weight loss pills actually worked. It’s been very interesting watching reports of Dr. Mehmet Oz on Capital Hill. He got called out for endorsing certain ‘miracle’ weight loss products to his television viewers. Ironically, at the end of one of the news clips Dr. Oz says, “The basis of long-term well-being is diet and exercise. It always has been and probably always will be.” (Original clip found here at NBC News.) Plain and simple words that couldn’t be more true. Nothing fancy, nothing sensational, but amazingly, the miracle of weight loss lies within one person, YOU!
As a young girl, I was taught if you wanted to get somewhere, or to achieve something, you needed to put in the effort and work hard. Like most kids of the 1970’s, I rode my bike all over the neighborhood, morning ’til night. If there was somewhere I wanted to go, I’d grab that trusty old bike and go.
Then as a teen, playing on the girls basketball team at school was life changing. I realized my body was capable of accomplishing wonderful things — that I was a hard worker, strong, capable, and ‘tough as nails’.
While in my last year of high school, I remember a weight loss pill that hit the market called Fen-Phen. Many Mom’s in my neighborhood decided to try it. I found it all very confusing. A lot of women had rapid weight loss results. It wasn’t until years later, when the horrible side effects of heart valve problems surfaced, and the drug was pulled. Drugs like these give people false hope that weight loss can be easy and fast — but at what cost?
Today there are many ‘miracle’ weight loss products on the market. In your local grocery store, you can find shelves of products promising amazing results. I was shocked to hear that **$2.4 billion were spent on weight loss products and services last year in the United States. Unfortunately, many of these weight loss products make bogus claims and have potentially harmful side effects. By believing that weight loss can be achieved from taking a pill, you only cheat yourself. In the end, you miss out on feeling satisfaction as you get stronger, accomplishment from seeing what great things your body can do, and confidence that YOU are truly amazing!
Weight loss is not easy. I’m not going to lie. But it’s possible, and it’s worth it. I’m here for you! Eating healthy foods and making time for exercise truly are key to a healthy body and a happy life.
